What have you been up to this summer? Part 2

 

Class of 2026’s Vera Wangʻs research project was chosen as Hawaiʻi’s entry to the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. Vera submitted her engineering project, Constructing a Novel Aquatic Microplastic Filtration Device Utilizing Natural, Biodegradable Materials, to the US SJWP, and was fortunate to be selected as the Hawaii state winner. During the summer, she had the opportunity to travel and experience a residential college life at the Colorado School of Mines, and competed at the National Competition against other state winners and their projects. Vera said that she had such an exciting time meeting people from all over, each representing their state with unique and fascinating projects. Congratulations Vera!

Class of 2026’s Leonard Cheung was selected to participate in the PAC-STEP offered by the UH Mānoaʻs Engineering program which focused on transporation. Leonard met with applicants from around the islands, Guam and America Samoa. They stayed at the dorms while having classes at the COE, and visited The Bus, Daniel Inouye Airport, engineering offices and the Port of Honolulu.

Class of 2025ʻs Rowen Balagtas accepted in the Hawaii School Auto Academy at Honolulu Community College. This was an intensive 6-week summer course in automotive engineering with college credit. The program included classroom time and an internship at Cutter Dodge. He shadowed mechanics and was given the opportunity to learn diagnostics and repair vehicles.
